TMJ Therapy & Equilibration Solutions at Copperstone Dental

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders refer to a group of conditions that affect the temporomandibular joint, which connects your jawbone to your skull. These disorders can cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. Symptoms of TMJ disorders may include jaw pain or tenderness, difficulty chewing, clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth, and jaw locking.

Equilibration, also known as occlusal adjustment or bite adjustment, is a dental procedure aimed at correcting the alignment of the teeth and the way they come together when biting or chewing. It involves reshaping the biting surfaces of the teeth to create a more harmonious and balanced bite relationship.

Here's how equilibration may relate to TMJ disorders:

  1. Malocclusion: Malocclusion refers to misalignment of the teeth or improper relationship between the upper and lower teeth when the jaws are closed. Malocclusion can contribute to TMJ disorders by causing excessive stress on the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. Equilibration may be used to adjust the bite and alleviate this stress, potentially reducing TMJ-related symptoms.
  2. Bruxism: Bruxism, or teeth grinding and clenching, is a common contributing factor to TMJ disorders. Chronic bruxism can lead to muscle tension, joint inflammation, and tooth wear. Equilibration may be recommended as part of the treatment plan for bruxism to ensure that the teeth come together evenly and minimize the impact of grinding forces on the TMJ.
  3. Muscle Imbalance: Muscle imbalance around the jaw joint can also contribute to TMJ disorders. Equilibration aims to achieve a balanced bite by adjusting the way the teeth come together, which can help reduce muscle strain and improve jaw function.

It's important to note that while equilibration may be beneficial for some patients with TMJ disorders, it is not always the appropriate treatment option. The management of TMJ disorders often involves a multidisciplinary approach, including conservative treatments such as pain management, jaw exercises, splint therapy, and lifestyle modifications. In severe cases, surgery may be considered.

If you are experiencing symptoms of a TMJ disorder, it's essential to consult with a dentist or a TMJ specialist for a comprehensive evaluation and personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and condition. They can determine whether equilibration or other interventions may be beneficial in managing your TMJ-related symptoms.
